More Day Trips from The Forever Inn, Wadesboro, NC
6. Crawling for Art, Pottery and Antiques Start across the street at Granny Hollow Pottery where Danny and Denise Beachum have an on-site pottery studio and display their works in their gift shop (Fancy Crafts). A few doors down is Lord George Anson Antiques specializing in southern antiques and collectibles. Also check out the gifts and floral designs from Michael Horne Florist in the same building. A few blocks away, you can visit the art gallery of the Anson County Arts Council where art and crafts created by local artists are on display and for sale. Next door is the Ansonia Theatre, an old vaudeville theatre, currently undergoing a major renovation. Also in Uptown Wadesboro is Price's Place, in an old printing company's location, where there is now a collection of pottery, antiques and collectibles. Across Highway 74 at the South Piedmont Community College, in an old converted textile mill is the Olde Mill Gallery specializing in works of art including oils, watercolors, mixed media, pottery, photographs and jewelry by local and regional artists. Funded by a grant from the E-NC Authority, the Olde Mill Gallery is the centerpiece of an incubator for the arts with studio space and business assistance available.
Travel north on Highway 109 from Wadesboro to Mt. Gilead where you'll find two interesting antique stores - Mt. Gilead Antique Mall and The Vintage - in downtown Mt. Gilead. Right next to The Vintage antique store is a great restaurant called The Ford Place in an old renovated Ford motor dealership.
Take Highway 73 out of Mt. Gilead and head to Albemarle (Hwy 73 to a left turn at Hwy 24/27) for a visit to the Falling Rivers Gallery in downtown Albemarle featuring many handcrafted works by local artists - pottery, stained glass, watercolors, oils, bronzes, metal art, wood, textiles, sculptures and more - run by the Stanly Arts Guild. Then visit a great antique mall - The Albemarle Marketplace - a huge building full of antiques, collectibles and home accents (also open on Sunday afternoons).

On the Way to Oakboro NC
7. Over the Hills and Through the Woods
Take a drive down 2-lane country roads through rolling hills, dotted with old oak trees, grazing cattle, picturesque old houses for a relaxing day in the country, stopping at antique stores, visiting an art gallery and enjoying a great meal at a country store & restaurant.
Out of Wadesboro, head northwest on Hwy 742, on a beautiful 2-lane country road to the small town of Oakboro (at intersection of 742 and 205) which has been revitalized. On Main Street in downtown Oakboro, there’s an old-fashioned hardware store, an antique store and a great art gallery (Ron Taylor Fine Arts) with original watercolor paintings and limited edition prints. Ron also offers pottery, photography, automotive art, baskets, woodcarvings and decoys from other local and regional artists. In this same location is a separate gallery displaying pieces of art from the collection of Andreas Bechtler. (Mr. Bechtler’s extensive collection will eventually be displayed in the Bechtler Art Museum scheduled to be built in downtown Charlotte.) (Details below.)
Oakboro also has the Fountain Music Hall featuring bluegrass music (see www.oakboromusichall.com). Oakboro is home to a monthly "cruise-in" when hundreds of people converge on downtown Oakboro with old cars and compete in a "burn-out" (www.oakborocruisein.com) (4th Friday of every month from 5:00 pm). Or when you’re ready for lunch or dinner, continue north on Hwy 205 to 24/27. When you reach 24/27, turn left and in a few miles you’ll reach Locust. About 1 mile past the intersection with Hwy 200, and on the left in a mile or two, you’ll find The Fresh House, a popular country store & restaurant with very good food and a warm & friendly atmosphere. If you need a hug, just ask.
